The Top Ten Big East Story Lines for 2004

2. Attack of the Kiwi

Quick, what college does Mathias Kiwanuka go to? If you have never seen the man that they call Kiwi play, or for that matter ever heard of him, don’t worry about it, you’ll know soon enough. The only words I could use to describe what he has gone through since the beginning of his sophomore season is meteoric rise. At about 6-8, 250 pounds, he has freakish size, and the speed of a Dwight Freeney. Imagine Julius Peppers at North Carolina, but better, that’s Kiwi. He’s still developing as a player, and its safe to say that we could be talking about a top 3 pick come next January. Can he improve on last year’s amazing 83 tackle, 11.5 sack performance? Probably. The most intriguing part about him is how he has tried to improve himself over the offseason, knowing that with Mimi and VT gone, he could be the best defensive player in the conference. He needs to hit the weight room to erase his only weakness - lack of upper body strength. BC is building a good defensive with Kiwanuka and top recruit Brian Toal in the mix - a nice base for the future. I know, Kiwanuka isn’t exactly the easiest name to remember, so just keep repeating this: Kiwi: Top 3 draftee.
