The Top Ten
Big East Story Lines for 2004 3. Pittsburgh: After Larry Anyone can look at this Pittsburgh team and immediately think about how they are going to bomb without their leading passer, rusher, and receiver; but you have to see beyond that. Sure, Larry Fitzgerald might have been the best player in the history of Pittsburgh football (and I say that with full knowledge that Dan Marino and Curtis Martin went there), but what this should really be seen as the judgment day (season, I guess) for the Pittsburgh football program. Many a time a team rises to the top with the help of one or two star players, but as soon as they leave, so does the team, that is from national attention. They certainly have the players to make a continued impact, Taylor Palko should probably win the QB job, even though he’s had problems with the staff in the past, and Jawon Walker had more carries than Brandon Miree last year. The WR position is probably the position with the least hope of finding a breakout player, but who knows, we weren’t exactly expecting Larry to do what he did the past two years. The Defense has some nice young players, like H.B. Blades, who should impress this year. Watch for the biggest test for the young starters to come early in the season, with their September 18 matchup with Nebraska in Pittsburgh.
