The Top Ten Big East Story Lines for 2004

9. A New Slogan for Rutgers Football: Not That Bad

I know what you’re thinking, “Rutgers is awful, they always have been and they always will be,” but as the great Lee Corso would say, not so fast my friend. Head Coach Greg Schiano has actually brought an amount of respect and pride back into the State University of New Jersey, and along with that comes players. Grabbing a top 100 recruit each of the past three years, linebacker Berkely Hutchinson, defensive tackle Nate Robinson, and fullback Dwayne Jones, Rutgers recruiting no longer has that familiar leftovers feel. Now they are actually going after top flight players and doing what they should have been all along - keeping New Jersey talent in New Jersey. Top 15 recruit Brian Toal actually planned on donning a RU cap for a while after his official visit, but barely chose Boston College at the deadline. Top WR Dwayne Jarrett had RU on his final list of teams, a big step despite him signing elsewhere. Rutgers is now starting to develop the players they get from an early stage. QB Ryan Hart has now been starting since mid-way through his freshman year. He can now be considered a top QB in the Big East. RB Brian Leonard was chosen as the Big East Freshman of the year, over future top 5 pick Ryan Moore, and was placed on the Freshman All-American team. With the exceptions of WVU, BC, and Pitt, they play a light schedule. There could be a bowl birth next year, which may not be big news in other college cities, but for Rutgers, is finally a step in the right direction.
